Welcome to DIAS Dunsink Observatory operated as part of the Astronomy & Astrophysics Section of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS). Dunsink Observatory has been a centre for astronomical research and public engagement in Ireland since its foundation in 1785, and has been home to many of Ireland’s most famous scientists, including Sir William Rowan Hamilton.

We are delighted to announce that DIAS Dunsink Observatory is re-opening to the public for select events throughout 2022. Since we are a working research institute we are only open to visitors during these special events.

We launched the Hamilton Greenway campaign as part of Maths Week 2020, a proposed foot and bike route that would link the Observatory, the Tolka Valley Greenway, the Royal Canal Greenway and Ashtown. The route would be transformative for staff and public access to the Observatory.

DIAS Astrophysics includes approximately 35 researchers based at Fitzwilliam Place in central Dublin and at Dunsink Observatory in west Dublin. DIAS Astrophysics undertakes research on solar and stellar physics, space weather, planetary science, star formation, the interstellar medium, high energy astrophysics, and instrumentation. We have contributed to many European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA projects, including Solar Orbiter and the James Webb Space Telescope, and are actively involved in ground-based facilities such as LOFAR and the European Southern Observatory. We collaborate with researchers at universities and research institutes in Ireland and around the world.

DIAS Dunsink also provides a local weather monitoring service to Met Eireann, tracks meteors as part of the international NEMETODE network, and monitors the Earth’s ionosphere as part of the SuperSID VLF network.

The IAS will have number of safe Solar Telescopes with special Solar Filters to view the Sun. Also, Michael Grahan (IAS) will be giving a short talk on the solstice with some demonstration about light.


Warning: NEVER look at the SUN without a specially designed solar filter.

Eclipse expedition onboard the P&O ship Pacific Explorer. The solar eclipse was a hybrid (i.e. annular at the beginning and end of the central track and total in between). The ship anchored in the Exmouth Gulf, within sight of the North West Cape and the town of Exmouth in Western Australia. Here, the spectacle of totality lasted just 60 seconds, but it was a wonderful breath-taking sight. The photo show a wide-angle view during totality at 11:30 (local time), taken with a Canon EOS R50 on an automatic setting.

Venus and Jupiter are now approaching each other in the dusk sky. By March 1st they close with half a degree of each other.

Member Barry Pickup photographed the scene on 2023 February 22 when the crescent Moon was between the planets. Canon 500D DSLR with a 50 mm lens used. Jupiter (mag -2.1) is above the Moon and Venus (mag -3.9) to the bottom right.

Jonathan Coleman MRIA, Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy in the School of Physics has been recognised for his contribution to materials science and has won Research.com Materials Science Leader Award for 2023.

Seventy years ago on 10th December 1951, Trinity’s head of physics, E.T.S. Walton (1903-1995), received jointly with J.D. Cockcroft the Nobel Prize in Physics from the King of Sweden. On 14th April 1932 the two prize-winners, working in Ernest Rutherford’s Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, had split for the first time the atomic nucleus by artificial means. Walton was the first and for many years the only Irish recipient of a Nobel Prize in any of the sciences.
